The purpose of a documentary is to document actuality, this can be with real footage or reconstructions in order to provide factual accounts of real life. Some documentaries are staged footage, and just because it's factual doesn't always mean that it is accurate. This means that any factual account must have more than one point of view, therefore making all different aspects facts, but not entirely accurate as it is impossible to record an account from every aspect.
"What portrays documentary are recorded sound and images of actuality." - John Corner.
John Grierson (the first documentary film-maker) argues that the purpose of a documentray is to create empathy and national identity.
